Good to know
Your nose and thermometer tell you a lot, but a proof and Tralle hydrometer gives you the hard number. Float it in a sample and read the alcohol strength directly. Taking a reading at each jar turns guesswork into data, which is exactly what a good experiment needs.
What do the scales on a proof and Tralle hydrometer mean?
The Tralle scale shows percent alcohol by volume. US proof is twice that number, so 100 proof equals 50% ABV. Having both scales on one hydrometer means you can read whichever you prefer without doing the math.
- Use a test jar: Float the hydrometer in a tall test jar or proofing parrot so it hangs freely without touching the sides or bottom.
- Correct for temperature: Readings change with sample temperature. Check the sample temperature and the calibration temperature marked on the hydrometer, then adjust.
- Read it right: Spin it gently to release air bubbles, let it settle and read at eye level where the liquid meets the stem.
- Track your run: Write down the proof of each jar. Watching the numbers fall over a run helps you decide where your cuts belong.
Handle it gently, rinse it with clean water after use and store it safely between runs. Pair it with our plastic test jar for a complete proofing kit. Making spirits requires a federal TTB permit. Have questions about reading your hydrometer? Contact us and we'll help.
