The wash goes into the pot, heat drives off vapor, and you can watch, measure and adjust every stage after that. How does a 20 gallon copper still with thumper and worm work?
Think of it as three connected chambers. Each one does a single job, and together they turn a liquid into a cleaner, more concentrated distillate. It feels like alchemy, but it's plain physics, and you control it with heat and cold water.
- The pot: heat the 20 gallon pot slowly. A gentle ramp gives you more control over when vapor starts to move.
- The thumper: vapor bubbles through liquid in the 2.8 gallon thumper, heats it and vaporizes again, giving you a second distillation in one run.
- The worm: in the 2.8 gallon worm, vapor travels through a coil in cold water and condenses. Collect it in small jars so it's easier to separate your cuts.
- The copper: heavy copper conducts heat well and reacts with sulfur compounds, which is why it's still the traditional choice.
