Good to know
Starting out and want to get it right the first time? Our 10 gallon copper starter still with thumper and worm is what we call the Perfect Starter Still, set up with everything you need. It's cut from 20 oz., 22 gauge copper that we buy directly from Paul Revere Copper Co. We don't use roofing copper that contains lead. Learn on it now and keep running it as a spirit still as your skills grow.
Why start with a 10 gallon copper still?
If you start bigger, you won't outgrow your equipment after a few runs. You'll have room to learn heat control, how the thumper behaves and how to make cuts, all on one rig.
- Electric option: 110 volt electric heat can be added. Just ask us.
- First runs: clean the new still with a water run, then practice reading temperatures before anything else.
- Thumper and worm: vapor passes through the thumper and then condenses in the coiled worm. Keep the cooling water cold.
- Record keeping: write down heat settings, times and what you notice. Your notebook is the most valuable tool in your lab.
Distilling rewards curiosity. You're part alchemist, turning raw ingredients into something new, and part scientist, tracking every variable. Owning a still is legal in the US, and stills are also used for distilled water, essential oils and fuel alcohol. Making spirits requires federal TTB permits. Questions before you start? Contact us.
