Is a quick-clamp cap better on a 20 gallon copper still?
For many distillers, yes. A clamp closure makes it quicker to open the pot, load a fresh charge and get back to work, and quicker to open it again for cleaning. Less time spent sealing means more time on the parts of the run you actually control: heat, flow and cuts.
- Heavy copper: 22 gauge sheet makes a sturdy pot. A still handles heat and vapor, so build quality is a safety issue.
- Thumper: the 2.8 gallon doubler re-distills the vapor during the same run.
- Worm: a 2.8 gallon condenser. Keep its water cold, and replace it as it warms up.

After each run, rinse the pot and thumper with hot water and let everything air dry so the copper stays bright and ready. Owning a still is legal in the US, and this one works well for distilled water, essential oils and fuel alcohol. Making spirits requires federal TTB permits.
