Good to know
A 25 gallon copper still with thumper and worm is the classic three-piece rig, and ours is built the old way. It has a heavy copper pot with a 4-inch quick-clamp cap, a 3 gallon all-copper thumper and a 3 gallon all-copper condensing worm. All three pieces are hemmed and silver soldered with a water-based flux.
What does the thumper do on a 25 gallon copper still with thumper and worm?
The thumper sits between the pot and the worm. Hot vapor bubbles through the liquid inside it and redistills on the way through. That's the thump that gives it its name. Think of it as a second experiment inside the first, one you can adjust by changing what you put in it.
- Copper-to-copper fittings: The 1/2-inch fittings join copper to copper with a brass nut for a solid connection.
- Easy draining: The thumper has a drain plug, so emptying it between runs is quick and clean.
- Garden-hose cooling: Inside the condenser, a 1/2-inch worm has inlet and outlet garden hose connections. Run cold water through it from a standard hose.
- Temperature at a glance: A Pasco temperature gauge is included, so you can follow the run and time your cuts.
This still is built to handle every kind of alcohol, from whiskey to gin, rum and vodka. Owning it is legal in the US, but producing spirits requires federal TTB permits. It's also well suited to distilled water and essential oil work. Have questions about heat sources or setting up your three pieces? Ask us and we'll help you plan it out.
